This message includes information about an incident that occurred outside the university's Clery geography. However, Campus Safety is sharing this information to provide you with the information you need to take the appropriate precautions.

The University of Iowa Police Department wants community members to be aware of an incident that was reported to the Iowa City Police Department. Iowa City Police responded to Mercy Hospital, 500 E. Market Street, on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 3:35 p.m. for a report of a man stabbed. The victim was able to walk to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a 5'10", middle aged, dark haired, white man with a slender build wearing a dark blue shirt.

This incident is being actively investigated by the Iowa City Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact ICPD at 319-356-5275. In addition, anyone in that area with security cameras is asked to review their recordings and contact the Iowa City Police Department with any potential footage or information about this incident.

Safety Tips:

  • Keep your doors locked, even when you are at home.
  • Walk with a group whenever possible and be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you are being followed, walk, or run to a well-lit area or establishment and call 911.
  • Do not leave items of value out in plain sight, and never risk injury for material items. Give them up immediately if you are threatened with physical harm.
  • You are under no obligation to communicate with strangers; don't be concerned with appearing to be rude if you feel vulnerable.
  • If you observe a crime in progress, stay calm, find a safe location, and call the police immediately by dialing 911. Take note of as many as details as possible for law enforcement such as a description of the suspect, make, model, and license plate of a vehicle, etc.
  • Use campus safety services such as Nite Ride (free, late-night transportation service) and Rave Guardian (set a safety timer for your walk home).
