Examples
Medical Transports
A person is experiencing a mental health emergency or needs follow up care. Law enforcement may provide transportation or assist with securing transportation. Primary co-response with University Housing & Dining or Student Care and Assistance.
Mental Health Concern or Crisis
Student or employee is in urgent distress but does not pose an active threat to others. Law enforcement plays a supporting role if situation escalates. Primary co-response with University Housing and Dining, Student Care and Assistance, or Mobile Crisis.
Reporting/filing reports or charges
Those seeking law enforcement assistance may coordinate and/or request additional support when meeting with UIPD to report a crime. A campus or community resource may refer a person to the police if the situation is appropriate.
Standard Business Hours
For services outside of standard business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday) non-law enforcement contact and consultation may include UI Support and Crisis Line, Mobile Crisis, GuideLink, and UIHC resources. UIPD is in operation 24/7.

A person is experiencing a medical emergency, or a situation (such as a fire) that requires the support of first responders. After the situation is stable, UIPD may contact appropriate non-law enforcement resources for support and follow-up as applicable and aligned with protocol.

Additional Campus and Community Resources
State-certified police officers who enforce state, local, and federal laws and also certified as first responders to respond to medical and other emergencies. UI police officers respond to calls for service and investigate all criminal incidents that occur on university property. UIPD also regularly refers and connects impacted individuals with campus and community resources for follow-up care and support.

University Housing and Dining staff members are often the first to learn of and respond to an incident within the residence halls or dining facilities.
University Counseling Service is a confidential office that provides mental health services to students and postdocs free of charge, as well as psychoeducational programming and outreach services to support mental well-being, nurture student success, and contribute to an inclusive and safe campus community.

Trained student ambassadors who patrol during designated student sponsored/campus events, student gatherings, and in downtown Iowa City during high traffic, weekend hours with a focus on bystander intervention and overall safety.
Trained full time and student security officers who help support campus safety by conducting regular patrols of campus to deter crime and identify potential security threats; trained in bystander intervention.
Mental health counselors are dispatched to assist with a response when a person is experiencing a mental health crisis, or those supporting a person in crisis call for assistance.
This resource is not appropriate when the situation needs immediate response such as a medical emergency or a current threat of violence. Response times are within 60 minutes of dispatch.
