The University of Iowa Office of Clery Compliance has updated its Clery geography following the acquisition of the UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown, 500 E. Market St.

A university’s Clery geography is used to guide decision-making when it comes to communicating about confirmed or potential safety threats to the campus community.

The Clery Act requires all institutions of higher education participating in the federal student financial aid program to maintain two types of alerting systems for separate and distinct purposes:

  • Crime Alerts (timely warnings): are sent for Clery Act crimes that have already occurred in the campus Clery geography that could represent a serious or ongoing threat. These alerts are sent to the entire campus community via email. They are also posted on the Campus Safety website.

  • Hawk Alerts (emergency notifications): are sent when there is confirmation of an immediate threat (happening now) to the health and safety of the campus community. These alerts are sent via email, phone call, text message, or desktop notification, depending on the settings selected by the user. Text message is the fastest way to receive an alert.

This map outlines the University of Iowa’s Clery Geography as of March 1, 2024. This map is updated to reflect changes in property ownership and use.

The safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors is the university’s top priority, and clear communication about potential safety risks and emergencies provides those on campus with the information they need to stay safe and take any appropriate precautions.

With this acquisition of property comes the expansion of the university’s Clery geography. Therefore, any increase in Crime Alert or Hawk Alert messages alone is not necessarily an indication that crime rates on campus have increased or that a pattern of crime has emerged. To learn more about crime in your area and/or on campus, we encourage you to read the Campus Safety and Security Report and review previous crime alerts.

What to do in an emergency

This acquisition of property also means the UI Police Department has jurisdiction over the UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown.

  • In an emergency, call or text 911

  • Non-emergency line: 319-335-5022

How to report a Clery crime
