A small fire at Daum Residence Hall, 225 N. Clinton St., prompted an evacuation during the early morning hours on Thursday, Nov. 6. No injuries were reported, but some residents were temporarily displaced due to water damage caused by the building's sprinkler system.
The fire was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m. and quickly contained. Fire damage was limited to one room.
Students were evacuated safely and temporarily relocated to the lobby of Burge Residence Hall while first responders secured the scene. The university’s Residence Education staff, along with University of Iowa Police and the Iowa City Fire Department, responded promptly to support those impacted. As of Thursday morning, all students were able to return to their rooms aside from the unit directly affected by the fire.
“Our first priority is always the safety and well-being of our students,” says Mark Bullock, assistant vice president for Campus Safety. “We’re grateful the fire suppression system worked as it was supposed to, for the quick response by first responders and hall staff, and for the cooperation from students who were displaced early this morning.”
University Housing and Dining is coordinating support for students while cleanup and repairs are underway. Students with questions or in need of assistance following this incident should call 319-335-3000 or by sending an email to housing@uiowa.edu.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office and the UI's Fire Safety Coordinator. No additional information is available at this time.
