Winter Break is just around the corner. The residence halls will close on Dec. 20 at noon, and re-open on Jan. 17 at 8 a.m. However, students are welcome to stay on campus if they’ve filled out an application by Dec. 10. Campus Safety remains fully open and operational throughout the break.

As you wrap up finals and head out for a well-earned break, keep these simple tips in mind:

Tips for Residence Hall Rooms

Complete this checklist before you leave your room for winter break.

  1. Lock your place and take valuables with you.
If you’re leaving the residence hall or off-campus housing, lock your doors and windows and take your keys and valuables with you. Winter break is also a great time take home your bike or electric scooter if you won’t be using them during cold weather.

  2. Tidy up and check your thermostat.
Clean out your refrigerator, take out the trash, turn off lights, and put away any open food. Place any valuable items out of sight if you don’t take them with you and make sure to set your heat to a safe level before you leave.

  3. Stay weather aware and share your travel plans.
Keep an eye on the forecast and plan around any weather that might impact your travel. Fill up your gas tank, and pack a winter weather safety kit (blanket, charger, water, snacks, shovel) before you hit the road. Share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member so they know your route and estimated time of arrival. If you are involved in a crash on the highway, pull over safely, stay in your vehicle, and call 911 rather than walking on the shoulder to inspect any damage.

  4. Dress for the weather and complete the winter weather ensemble.
Layers are your friend. Make sure you have a hat, gloves, boots, and a warm jacket when you’re headed out. If you don’t have all your winter gear with you at school, break is a great time to track those items down so you can have them for the spring semester. Iowa can be especially cold during the first few months of the year.

  5. Rest, re-charge, and reach out if you need support.
Breaks can be a good time to reset. Catch up on sleep, catch up with friends, and unwind a little. If stress sneaks up on you, remember there are resources on campus to support your mental health as well as your academic success.
