The University of Iowa remains committed to supporting a safe and welcoming downtown experience for students and the broader community. Following a successful partnership launched last spring, the University of Iowa Police Department and Iowa City Police Department will continue joint downtown patrols throughout the fall semester. These patrols increase officer visibility during peak hours on Friday and Saturday nights and add to Iowa City’s existing downtown public safety resources.
You can help support your own safety and the safety of others by:
- Staying aware of your surroundings and looking out for your friends and others around you.
- Planning ahead to get home safely. Use free and low-cost transportation options such as Cambus, Nite Ride, and Hawk Vouchers.
- Trusting your instincts and reporting concerning or unsafe behavior to law enforcement or employees at the business you’re visiting.
- Seeking help from law enforcement, venue staff, or another trusted authority if you see someone who may need assistance rather than intervening in a potentially dangerous situation yourself.
- Putting safety first. If you witness a fight, medical emergency, or other dangerous situation, move to a safe location and call 911. Avoid gathering near the incident or putting yourself at risk to record video. Your actions can help emergency responders reach the scene faster and assist those who need help.
Safety downtown is a shared responsibility. By looking out for one another and reporting concerns promptly, we can all help support a safe environment for everyone.
