The University of Iowa is closely monitoring the high heat indices affecting our area, including the excessive heat warning and watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) that extends through later this week.
With heat index values forecasted to reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s important to keep in mind these safety tips from the NWS and look out for one another.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol
- Wear light colored, lightweight, and loose-fitting clothing whenever possible
- Spend time in air conditioned spaces
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
- Check on family members and neighbors
- Never leave people or pets in a car
- Watch for heat cramps and signs of heat exhaustion or stroke
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. If you or someone you know begins to experience symptoms, call 911.
